Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has introduced a simplified tax system for small shopkeepers and retailers across the country. The initiative aims to make the tax process easier for small businesses while bringing more businesses into the documented economy.
Under the new system, eligible small retailers can use a simplified tax mechanism instead of following the more complicated procedures of the regular tax system. The tax is linked to business turnover, with a minimum tax amount of Rs. 25,000.
The new scheme also aims to simplify tax filing. Eligible traders can submit a simplified return, reducing the paperwork and administrative burden normally associated with tax compliance.
According to the policy, certain eligible businesses may also receive relief from requirements such as routine audits, POS integration and digital invoicing.
The scheme is voluntary, meaning eligible traders can choose whether to participate or continue under the existing tax system.
The government says the main objective is to expand Pakistan’s tax base, encourage documentation of businesses and make tax compliance easier for small traders.
However, many small business owners are now watching closely to see how the new system will work in practice and whether it will actually reduce the difficulties faced by small traders.
The coming weeks are expected to show how traders respond to the new FBR initiative and whether it succeeds in bringing more small businesses into Pakistan’s formal tax system.
